Lady Trojan softball team still seeking more offense

After challenging his team two weeks ago, Marc Bentovoja saw a little improvement from his girls last week. Most impressively, the Lady Trojans won all four games during the busiest week of the season, including a 4-3 win over Galt in nine innings on Friday. Oak Ridge also won a pair of two-run games over Vista, 2-0, and another win over Galt, 5-3. The Lady Trojans also defeated Cordova, 4-0. The wins added up to another Sierra Valley Conference championship, as the team finished the season with a 12-0 record. The team’s season-long goal, however, is a fourth straight section title and to do that, Bentovoja still says the team has to score more runs. “We’re pitching OK and are defense has been pretty good, but we’re still struggling offensively,” Bentovoja said. “Right now we’re doing what it takes to win and hopefully that will be enough come playoff time.” Bentovoja said while his team is doing a good job getting runners on base, driving those runners in to score has been a problem. “We want the girls in position to drive in runs to hit the ball hard,” he said. “It’s not just enough to put the ball in play. I think the girls are worried about striking out when they should be focusing on hitting the ball hard and driving it somewhere. If we’re going to make an out, let’s make a loud out.” The team has plenty of time to work on hitting drills, as the playoffs start on May 21. The coaching staff will be working on hitting a good portion of the next eight days. “We’ve come up with some drills designed for the kids to get in the appropriate mindset and be more concerned with hitting the ball than with striking out,” Bentovoja said. “Defensively, we’ve got to treat the ball like gold when the opponent has runners in scoring position. I don’t know what to expect from the other teams in the playoffs, but I still believe we need to be scoring more runs.”
