A come-from-behind victory has Oak Ridge High’s varsity girls’ lacrosse team riding high. The Lady Trojans enter this week with an undefeated 3-0 record, including an impressive 10-9 win over California High School on March 6. Oak Ridge fell behind 5-0 before coach Ed Holton called a timeout. “We were playing with them but our mistakes are what gave them the lead,” Holton said. “I told the team if we just stopped making our mistakes we’d be fine.” The Lady Trojans did just that, cleaned up their play and got a goal. By halftime they trailed by only one, 5-4. The second half was a see-saw affair until California pulled away to a 9-8 lead with about eight minutes to play. That’s when freshman Bailey Eastman made the play of the game. “Bailey got the ball down in our end and just went coast-to-coast and went in and scored on a brilliant play,” Holton said. “That was the play of the game.” Eastman’s goal tied the game, while Maddy Hames scored the game-winner with about two minutes to play. From there California battered the Oak Ridge defensive zone and goalie Liz Shaeffer, but Shaeffer made all the big saves, including two penalty shots, as the Lady Trojans held on for the win. Morgan Bakarich led the team with four goals, while Hames scored three times and Bridget Hansen found the net twice. Oak Ridge finished the week on Friday with a 13-8 win over University. At one point the game was tied at five before the Lady Trojans pulled away. “Ari Spring was our key player in that game,” Holton said. “She scored two left-handed goals and for a right-hander that’s not easy to do. She was the player who separated us from them.” Holton also said that freshman Claire Freeman also played a solid game, utilizing her great speed. Oak Ridge’s next game is at Davis on Thursday.
