The Oak Ridge girls’ junior varsity and freshman basketball teams might not be in mid-season form, but by the looks of the final scores of their opening games of the season, it just looks like it.

Both teams won their respective tournaments in convincing fashion, the JV team winning at Roseville Tournament and the freshman winning the Bear River Tournament.

The formula was the same for both teams: open up a big lead, usually against under-manned teams, and go on to win easily. The JV girls opened with a 61-31 win over Antelope, jumping out to a 22-2 lead after one quarter on its way to a 31-8 lead at halftime.

“For learning the press on Monday, they did a pretty good job with it,” Oak Ridge coach Annie Lamy said. “We came out ready to play and then we figured we had a cushy lead and let them score in the second half and I hate that.”

Isamar Conde led the team with 19 points, while Saraya Smith scored 16 and Jessica Maglietta had nine.

Oak Ridge dominated Oakmont Friday, winning 73-25. Smith led the way with 21 points. Conde had 15 and Maglietta chipped in 10.Elizabeth Cameron had nine and Lauren Gaddis finished with eight.

With a 51-39 win over Woodcreek Saturday, the Lady Trojans won the tournament.

“Woodcreek was a very good team and we were excited to play them,” Lamy said. “They made us work and I hope we see them again.”

Smith had a huge game with 28 points, while Conde had seven and Sierra Lamy added five to go with eight rebounds. Krosby DeLapp pulled down five boards.

Smith, Maglietta and Conde were all-tournament selections.

The freshman team started their season with a 45-5 win over Bear River. It didn’t take long for the team to take care of their opponent, leading 28-3 after one quarter.

Laura Soper led the team with 19 points, while Briana Dulgar scored 12. The team made nine-of-12 free throws.

Against Roseville on Friday, Oak Ridge dominated in a 49-8 win. Again, Oak Ridge led 19-0 after the first quarter and the rout was on. Soper had 19 points and Siera Rasmussen scored 12.

Oak Ridge finished the tournament with a 51-17 win over Nevada Union. The Lady Trojans led 7-0 before the Miners even took a shot and the team rolled from there. Soper had 17 points, Shelley Hoffman scored 13 and Rasmussen finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

“We improved our rebounding with each game and got positive outcomes from our press,” coach Greg Lamy said. “We hit 13 three-pointers in the three games and I’ll take that.”
