Last week the Folsom ice rink opened with helping hands and smiling faces. The ice rink returned this year after a one-year hiatus due to financial problems. This year the Folsom Historic District Association, the Folsom Chamber of Commerce and Ice Unlimited worked together to have the rink return. “We are happy to have the ice rink back and in the Historic District,” said Jim Snook, of Snooks Candies and the Folsom Historic District Association president. “The excitement is building, we are fortunate to have the ice rink here. The rink is the perfect fit to wrapping up the revitalization project. It really brings a special feeling here. This is a great addition to the area, and it will be very helpful.” City staff, Folsom residents and families came out to start the season off with a jump on the ice and the hope of bringing more tourists and shoppers into the Historic District. “This is the start of a good season,” said Mayor Jeff Starsky, who put on ice skates himself to try out the new rink. Also at the opening ceremony, a canned food drive was held to donate to the Twin Lakes Food Bank in Folsom. More than 800 pounds of canned goods were collected from the food drive, said Kathy Boone, Twin Lakes Food Bank executive director. “We are going to feed hundreds of families at Christmas and this is really going to help us out,” said Boone. “We would really like to thank the Folsom Chamber and all of their help in this. This is a wonderful little community we are in.” Erin Gonzalez, 15, of Loomis has taken ice skating lessons in Roseville for eight years. She came out to welcome visitors at the new rink. “I think this ice rink is great and it will help bring excitement to the street,” Gonzalez said. “We will be performing a few shows out here.” Karen West, 46, of Folsom came out to skate and enjoy the rink with her children. “My kids helped decorate the ice rink and we love volunteering in our community,” West said. “We plan to come skate this year, this is so fun.”
