Hummer, Dwelley lift Oak Ridge over Pleasant GroveBy: Staff Report
Oak Ridge’s varsity baseball team got back on the winning track Wednesday, ripping Pleasant Grove 11-3 to even the series following a 7-4 loss on Tuesday.
The Trojans, 2-3 in the Delta River League and 8-8 overall, will try to win the series at home Friday at 4 p.m.
If last Friday’s game against Jesuit was big, this week’s game is even bigger. The Trojans desperately need a win if they want to entertain thoughts of a league title.
On Wednesday, Tommy Hummer allowed only one earned run, scattered six hits and struck out five. Ross Dwelley led the offense with two hits, including a grand slam, and knocked in four runs. Ryan Sullivan also homered and drove in two, while Alec de Watteville had three RBIs and Logan Denholm added two hits.
Trailing 2-0 after three innings, the Trojans exploded for nine runs in the fourth. Dwelley started the rally with a double and Sullivan followed with a home run to tie the game.
Kyle Barisone and Denholm hit back-to-back singles before F.P. Santangelo’s squeeze bunt scored pinch-runner John Rico.
Chris Roppolo was hit by a pitch to load the bases and de Watteville walked to drive in Denholm. Mickey Meinhofer singled in Santangelo and Dwelley followed with his grand slam to put the Trojans up 9-2.
Oak Ridge tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Denholm and Roppolo scored on de Watteville’s two-run double.
