-A +A
Oak Ridge senior Caitlin Welsch, 18, is a member of the girls’ varsity water polo team. She’s scored 12 goals so far this season. Here are some more facts about her. How did you get into water polo? Freshman year my best friend convinced me to play, but, ironically, she quit after the first practice. What position do you play and what are your responsibilities? I usually play the hole, which you could compare to the quarterback in football. If we can't get a hole set, the offense pretty much breaks down. What skills does it take to be a good water polo player? Dedication. You don’t necessarily need to be a great swimmer, but you have to spend lots of time practicing. Is there something you do before every match? Not personally, but as a team we always have a team huddle to get pumped up for the game. What other sports do you play and which is your favorite and why? I also play basketball, and no offense to water polo, but I definitely have more passion for basketball. What Elementary school did you go to and what is your favorite memory from being there? Lake Forest Elementary and I would have to say my favorite memory would be going to Coloma in fourth grade. Do you have any pets? No I don't have any pets, but my sister and I are trying to talk my parents into a puppy. what’s one life lesson you’ve learned from competing in athletics? To fight through even harder than before when things start getting tough. What are your plans for Halloween this year? I am heading up to Seattle to go to my aunt’s annual Halloween party and go trick-or-treating with my cousins. What is your favorite type of music and who is your favorite artist? I don't really have a favorite type of music; I like pretty much anything. My favorite artist is definitely John Mayer. Besides the sports you play, what other hobbies do you have? I love to ski and I finally just learned how to wakeboard. I love going out on the lake, and also just hanging out with my friends. What do you normally eat for breakfast? A bowl of cereal or peanut butter toast. What do you like best about being an Oak Ridge Trojan? I’m proud to be a Trojan because we dominate in academics and sports most of the time. What are your future plans? I want to attend college, hopefully in Washington, and possibly look into a career having to do with medicine, but right now my future is very undecided.
