Oak Ridge High's freshman girls' basketball team ended the preseason with a perfect 12-0 record. The Lady Trojans won four tournaments along the way, starting off with Bear River and continuing to Cordova, El Camino and then last week's Trojans Toss-Up. Oak Ridge swept Elk Grove, Rocklin and Placer last week to win their own tournament. In the opener against Elk Grove, it was all Oak Ridge in a 47-13 win. Stefanie Raulino, Jillian Spink and Ariel Noreiga led the team with eight points apiece. "We were able to use a lot of our bench players and they all did a fairly decent job," Oak Ridge coach Greg Lamy said. "We did a good job working the ball and running our plays." Oak Ridge followed that easy win up with their closest game of the tournament, a 36-35 win over Rocklin. Although Oak Ridge beat Rocklin by 22 points during the Bear River Tournament, this game was much closer with neither team leading by more than three points the entire game. In the end, Spink gave Oak Ridge the win with a driving layup with 11 seconds to play. Rocklin had a chance to win it, but their shot was off the mark and Erin Hoops pulled down the rebound. Spink again led the team with eight points, while Hoops and Raulino chipped in seven apiece. "We had a few turnovers in the beginning, but we settled down and were patient with the ball and that was the key," Lamy said. Oak Ridge finished the tournament with a 53-28 win over Placer in a game where everything went well. Oak Ridge led 18-2 after the first quarter and went on to win easily. "I wish I could bottle that game up and use it whenever we needed a little bit of it," Lamy said. "It was the best game we've played all year, and the best part about it was that we did it with our man-to-man defense." Spink led the team with 16 points, while Noreiga and Hoops both scored 12. For her outstanding play, Spink was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while Hoops made the all-tournament team. Oak Ridge begins league play on Jan. 5 at Cordova.
