Four Oak Ridge tennis players make all-league team

Oak Ridge’s Tanner Schmutte, Jimmy Giovannini, Andrew Hall and Nic Atkinson made the all-Delta River League tennis team by reaching the semi-finals of the singles and doubles championship last week. Schmutte placed second in the singles tournament, losing to Jesuit’s Suresh Ewaran, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the finals. Ewaran also knocked out Giovannini in the semis, 7-5, 6-3. Hall won the No. 3 singles tournament, while Atkinson took second at No. 5. Oak Ridge’s Alex Charn also placed second at No. 4 singles, as did Jacob Zetlin at No. 6. Both players lost in three sets to opponents from Jesuit. In doubles action, Hall and Atkinson reached the semis before losing to Jesuit, 6-2, 6-3. The Oak Ridge pair rebounded to defeat Folsom 6-3, 6-1 to take third. Tom Barton and Charlie Conarro won the No. 1 doubles tournament with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jesuit. Matt Fergerson and Matthew Lai took second at No. 2 doubles, as did Scotty Lee and Jonathan Kim at No. 3. Schmutte competes in the section singles tournament this week. The Division I section tournament began Tuesday as Oak Ridge hosted Napa. The winner will play in the quarterfinals on Monday.
