The Folsom Lake College men’s tennis team closed out Big 8 Conference regular season play yesterday with a tough 5-4 loss to Shasta in Redding.

The match was a continuation of a rained-out/postponed match from March 19. On that day, the doubles matches were completed before the rain came, but the singles had to be postponed. Shasta narrowly won all three doubles matches, so the Falcons started play yesterday down 3-0. Folsom Lake College needed to win five of the six singles matches to secure a team victory, but came up just one win short.

Singles

#1 Kurt Marpuri lost 1-6, 3-6

#2 Argish Gevorgyan lost 6-7, 2-6

#3 Craig Wheeler was tied 1-1 when his opponent retired due to injury

#4 Mark Quimbo won 6-1, 6-2

#5 Preston FaGalde won 6-1, 4-6, 6-3

#6 Shawn Samson won by default

Doubles

Marpuri/Wheeler lost 6-8

Gevorgyan/Quimbo lost 5-8

FaGalde/Samson lost 4-8

Upcoming: The Big 8 Conference Tournament takes place at American River College Thursday through Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Folsom Lake College men’s golf team traveled to Rocklin for Big 8 Tournament No. 6 at Whitney Oaks Golf Club. The Falcons finished second with a team score of 391, just three strokes behind conference leader Santa Rosa’s 388. The win pushes Santa Rosa’s lead to five points at the halfway mark in the Big 8 schedule. FLC scoring leader for the day was freshman Brad Peil with a 74, followed by Joel Slak at 75. According to coach Barry Zarecky, each one of the Falcon players had one bad hole (double or triple bogey) that inflated their score. The team must refocus quickly as they travel to Santa Rosa Thursday for Big 8 tournament No. 7 at Oakmont Golf Club.
