The Falcons opened the season last Friday at home vs. Cosumnes River College with the men winning a close 5-4 match, while the women fell to the Hawks 7-2. Sophomore Nik Tummala, who won his No. 1 singles match in three sets, then teamed with freshman Nick Lord to win their No. 1 doubles match in three sets, led the men’s team. Also winning their singles matches were No. 5 Gary Peiffer and No. 6 Perry Torres, who later teamed up to win the deciding No. 3 doubles match. The Falcon women's match was much closer than the final score indicated. Two of the nine matches went to a third set, with Cosumnes River narrowly winning both. No. 1 single Lily Wong was playing in the third set when she was forced to retire with leg cramps. Highlights included freshman Kristina Bodeman winning her first collegiate singles match, playing at No. 6, and Emily Roberts and Lauren Schultz winning their No. 2 doubles. Next up for the Falcons: The women will travel to Santa Clara on Thursday to take on Allan Hancock College of Santa Maria, then play in the Mission College Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Falcon men travel to south Sacramento on Friday for a rematch with Cosumnes River.
