Familiar Faces: Klassen enjoys his place behind the scenes
By: Menka Belgal Telegraph Correspondent
If you’re seeing a movie at the El Dorado Hills Regal theater, then you might spot Matt Klassen, general manager for the movie theater. He’s been with the El Dorado Hills theater since the day it opened in 2005. What do you love most about your job? Working with a great staff of people at the theater. I really feel we have the friendliest group of people in the whole El Dorado County. It makes coming to work each day a lot of fun. What is the most interesting thing that’s happened to you? I was working on the night we opened up “Pirates of the Caribbean 2.” We sold out every seat in our building to the midnight showing. I didn’t realize so many locals enjoyed dressing up as pirates. In fact, I have come to discover that Thursday night midnight films draw a lot of costumed guests to the theater. It is always interesting and a lot of fun. What are your three favorite songs? It may be odd to some, but I’m a young guy who likes old church hymns (like) “Nearer Still Near,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” and others. It is what I grew up with and still cherish today. Every time I hear Rick Astley’s song “Never Gonna Give You Up” when I get pranked, (it) always puts a smile on my face. The classic “Rick Roll” gets me every time. I also love the musical production of “Les Miserable.” There are no bad songs in my opinion. What is your favorite movie and why? I loved the “Lord of Rings” trilogy. The characters are fantastic, the music is epic, and the story is just amazing. All three are equally good in my eyes. I also have a special place in my heart for “Rocky IV.” It is pure fun. What hobbies do you enjoy? I love playing a good strategy game — board game or Xbox. I love a variety of outdoor activities, being around family and reading a good book. I guess if eating could be a hobby, I would say I enjoy that too. What about your family? My family is great. I have been married to my beautiful wife for 10 years. She too works for Regal part time, but is also a full-time mom. We have a 5-year-old daughter who gives us unbelievable joy. She is really a great kid who loves being around family and doing what me and my wife are doing. We added a new puppy to the home a few weeks ago. He has made current life interesting. What causes are you passionate about? On a work level, I am passionate about great guest service and keeping a clean building. I live in El Dorado Hills and came here with the mentality that I wanted to give my home community something special. We work hard to make our theater a place where families want to come and not just because it is the closest option to their home. On a personal level, I have one great passion; serving my God, Jesus Christ, with my whole heart in all that I do. What is one thing about you people might be surprised to learn? I became a general manager for a theatre that is a part of Regal Entertainment Group when I was 19 years old. I have now been in this industry for a little over 13 years. I also have a horrible addiction for milk and cookies.
