FOLSOM CA - Whether twisty or straight, combed or wild, Folsom will see an array of whiskers come April 6 when the Powerhouse Pub hosts the second Northern California Beard and Mustache Competition.

For Ryan Scalise, organizer of the event put on by the Mustache and Beard Social Club, the contest is a way for people to have fun and let down their hair.

“These things are like going to a rock show,” Scalise said. “The crowd is yelling the whole time and alcoholic drinks are being consumed. It’s crowd participation and it’s a loud, fun good time.”

Last year saw 80 competitors and more than 100 spectators descend on Sutter Street.

“Why hold the event here? The area is good on Sutter Street. It’s perfect with the atmosphere it has,” Scalise said. “The night before the event we are doing a pub crawl down Sutter Street. With Lake Natoma Inn, it’s the perfect set up for the out-of-towners. We had such a good response last year, we wanted to do it again.”

Categories for the contest include natural mustache, styled mustache, goatee, sideburns, business beard, verdi, full beard styled mustache, full beard natural (more than one foot), partial beard, freestyle, whiskerina and full beard natural (less than one foot).

Scalise said the Folsom Historic District is a great place to host the competition.

“It’s cool. With the history of old Folsom right there (and) the Folsom Prison nearby, it’s a good set up for these events,” he said.

He said they expect more than 80 competitors this year.

“I believe we have 50 pre-registered already (as of March 28). A lot of guys do day-of registration. We should hit 80 or more,” he said.

What should people expect?

“It’s one of those events when people who have never been to one of these, they start taking photos with their cell phones and texting and calling friends. It’s awesome,” Scalise said.

If people are looking for more than whiskers, they are in luck.

“The Sailor Jerry Airstream trailer will be there, photographers on hand, some roller derby girls. It will be fun,” Scalise said. “We will have some live music going on too.”

Germane Smith, general manager for Powerhouse Pub, is looking forward to the contest.

“It was a surprise to most of us here, since it was their first,” she said. “It was a great event. It was wall-to-wall people. It’s something different. Obviously, there’s something out there for everybody.”

She said the contest is a great way to express individuality.

“It’s going to be great,” she said. “We had a gentleman come in last week sporting his handlebar mustache and he carried it well. Everybody has their unique quirky thing they do and if we can help them express it, it’s just awesome.”
