Eight Oak Ridge wrestlers will attempt to qualify for the state tournament this weekend. Oak Ridge had 10 wrestlers suit up for the Division II section championships held in their own gym last weekend and all but two advanced to this weekend’s Masters Tournament at the University of the Pacific. Vinny Waldhauser was the only Oak Ridge wrestler to reach the finals on Saturday and he will have the best seed of the group this weekend having won the 160-pound weight class. Trey Reese (119) and Josh Dawson (135) both finished third in their weight classes, while Brandon Buriani (125), Keaton Subjeck (130), Greg Barrier (140) and Alex Diaz (152) finished in fourth place. Preston Dean also qualified for Masters by placing fifth at 189 pounds. Xavier Liongson (112) and Hugh Ellerman (145) also competed in the tournament but did not place in the top-five and failed to advance. “Overall, I’m happy with our performance,” Oak Ridge coach Casey Rhyan said. “Once we got over our nerves, we wrestled tough. We had four tough semi-final matches. We could have had four in the finals. They were all the type of matches where they could have gone either way. The kids wrestled back very tough in consolations. I feel like we’re peaking at the right time. Anything can happen next week.”
