Erin Gorrell couldn’t be more passionate about bicycling and she hopes some of her enthusiasm rubs off on the El Dorado Hills community. Gorrell is hosting The Folsom Bike/Von Housen Town Center Criterium on Sunday, where racers will be cruising a loop around Town Center in 10-timed races beginning at 7:15 a.m. with the final race, featuring professional riders, scheduled to begin at 4:55 p.m. “I believe cycling is a great community event and Town Center is a great venue to hold a race,” Gorrell said. “There’s no other place like it on the Highway 50 corridor. There are a ton of people active in cycling in the community and I want to create that hometown feel and Town Center has that look like an old Italian village.” Riders will race down Town Center Boulevard, turn left on to Vine street and work their way around back to Town Center Boulevard via Mercedes Lane and Post Street. A full field of racers would feature 700 cyclists, but because it’s the first year of what she hopes will become an annual event, Gorrell expects to have about 500 racers and hopefully double that in spectators. Gorrell, who lives in Folsom, loves Town Center, a place she said gives people reasons to hang out there all day with the various businesses located there. The cycling race, she hopes, will add to the reasons. “Cycling is so exciting,” Gorrell said. “This is an all-day event and it will keep getting better and better as the racers get better until the pros race at the end of the day. I hope it brings a lot of community spirit to the area.” Gorrell, the proud owner of Folsom Bike, is opening a second store in May. The store, to be located at 4420 Town Center Boulevard, will be called Town Center Bike & Tri. To register for the race, go to folsombike.com. There will also be race day registration available. Spectators should park in the Blue Shield Business Park.
