Countdown is on for Cyclebration, Sept. 16-18

-A +A
The fourth annual family-friendly Cyclebration takes place Friday through Sunday, Sept. 16-18. With 11 different events offered, organizers say there is plenty for everyone from the serious racer to the casual rider, or even just as a spectator. The action kicks off into sky-high gear Friday afternoon and evening with the Fam Jam event. The Folsom Bike Park provides the setting for daring BMX pros to perform their gravity-defying aerial flips, tricks, and jumps. Spectators who are inspired by the action may test their skills during an open-ride session during the event; entry is $5 per person. New this year to Cyclebration is the just-for-kicks K.A.A.R.T. event, also held 5-9 p.m. Friday at the Folsom Rodeo Arena. K.A.A.R.T. stands for “Kids and Adults Racing Trikes” — and organizers dare you not to laugh at the spectacle of adults racing special oversized “big wheel” style trikes. Adventurous souls can also form teams and enter the side hack (sidecar-style) bicycle races, which promise to be equally amusing for spectators. Refreshments and snacks will be available on-site at the Lockdown Brewing Co. Beer Garden; race registration is also available on-site for $5 per person or $20 per four-person teams. The hub of the Cyclebration action takes place 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Festival and Expo in Folsom City Lions Park, and admission is free. The festival includes a bike show, music, activities, product demos and displays, food vendors and a beer garden. Many of the day’s races and rides start and finish on the festival grounds, making it a great place to catch up with friends and family and to watch the action. Saturday’s events include the Gold Rush Century rides, with 100, 62 and 30-mile options; the Willow Hill short-track mountain bike race; mountain bike and Folsom South Canal time trials; Folsom Family Scavenger Hunt; Cyclocross; a Bike Rodeo for kids and adults; and the Folsom Challenge Criterium races. Sunday offers two distinctive events that are all about speed — mountain bikers race on a cross-country course that begins at Folsom Prison, continues through the hills and ravines on the prison property, and ends in the Rodeo Arena. Road cyclists and handcycle racers compete by division in the Willow Creek Circuit Race, riding a lap-style format through a flat, fast course in Folsom (in the business park near Maximus) with an exciting straightaway sprint finish. Food and beverages are available from vendors at the Circuit Race venue, including the Lockdown Brewing Co. Beer Garden.
