By: Don Chaddock, The Telegraph
ELECTION NEWS – State Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) and Democrat Charlie Brown will square off in Placerville on Oct. 13 at the Board of Supervisors Chambers at 330 Fair Lane. Paula Lee will moderate the League of Women Voters forum. Submit questions to her at firstname.lastname@example.org. For more information, call 530-644-5797 or visit lwveldorado.org. The candidates are vying for the 4th Congressional District seat being vacated by Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Roseville). ... * * * MUSIC MAVEN – Singer Courtney Bowles is set to make a big splash when she returns to her old stomping grounds. Courtney is from El Dorado Hills, attended St. John’s Notre Dame School in Folsom and graduated from Oakridge High School in 2002. Her singing skills landed her a full-ride scholarship to San Diego State where she sang in a number of operas and toured So Cal in a chamber choir. She graduated in 2006 and just finished her first album (I can’t stand calling an album a “CD”). Courtney is slated to perform on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 3111 Tierra de Dios, El Dorado Hills. Suggested donation is $15 at the door. To get tickets early, call 530-677-3234. Be sure to give her a warm welcome home. … * * * CAN AND A HAIRCUT – The affable tonsorial artist “Barber John” Rivera, of Barber John’s at 381 Green Valley Road in El Dorado Hills, tells me that for every can of food someone brings in, 50 cents will be knocked off the price of their haircut. I’m sure there’s a limit, but you’ll need to check with John. The food will be donated to local food banks. Thanks for the heads-up on that one, John. … * * * TELEGRAPH HAPPENINGS – You now have another reason to check out edhtelegraph.com on Sundays. The staff has been hard at work penning a new blog called “Inside the Telegraph” and it will post every Sunday. Each staff member, including yours truly, will be responsible for writing the blog on a weekly basis. The online column will give readers insight into the process that we put into producing this weekly community newspaper. Feel free to leave comments and let us know what you think. Photographer and page paginator Philip Wood took reponsibility for this week’s blog and he gives some great insight into the planning that goes into our page layouts. It’s a fun read and we hope you enjoy it. ... * * * ODDS & ENDS – While the big news is that Gov. Schwarzenegger signed a bill ratifying the compact that will allow Red Hawk Casino to operate 5,000 slot machines, we shouldn’t lose sight of those employed by the operation. The casino just named Joe Diver as vice president of food and beverage. He has 23 years experience in the industry, most recently at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas, so be sure and give him a warm welcome. … Don Chaddock is the editor of the El Dorado Hills Telegraph.
