Gold Rush town stagecoach robbed ... again

Sutter Creek, just north of Jackson, will once again be the scene of a stagecoach robbery from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, during Black Bart Hold-Up Day. The event marks the actual hold-up by the infamous highwayman who held up the Wells Fargo Stage 124 years ago. The robbery netted the culprit $775 in express boxes and U.S. registered mail. And it was the last successful robbery completed by Black Bart who was captured later. Sutter Creek, dubbed “One of the best preserved towns in California Gold Country” by Sunset Magazine, will look familiar to Black Bart (as portrayed by Larry Worman). The stagecoach pulls up at a gallop, and Black Bart leaps out to hold his gun on the driver and says, “Please throw down your strong box, sir” while promising not to harm women or children. Balconied buildings still shade familiar Wild West characters garbed in period attire. Even the horse-drawn stagecoach the robber halts at 10 a.m., noon and 4 p.m. is authentic. There is plenty to do for the whole family all day long. Grab the excitement of foothill vigilantes, take in the cracklin’ drama of a Western theatre group, and watch gun safety and bullwhip demonstrations. Local Miwok Indians display their history and culture nearby and artists display and sell their one-of-a-kind artwork. For more information, call 800-400-0305.
