The proverbial curtain came down on the California High School Rodeo Association District 3 regular season last weekend as the varsity held its last day of events. All Around cowboy and cowgirl went to Clayton Brum from Galt High School and Cheyanne Carpenter of Lodi. The two will now join their fellow competitors in preparing for the California State Finals in Bishop June 11-16. Carpenter was in a close race with District 3?s Katie Rice for the All Around honor but came through with grace and style. ?It feels great. I mean it was a horse race until the end. Katie and I were really neck and neck all year. It was worth everything we put into it,? said Carpenter, a junior who also won the title last year. ?Katie, she does five events and I do six and she excels in her events so much more than I do. I try to stay strong and keep up with her but she?s just amazing. We pushed each other hard all year and that?s what made it a fun competition.? Carpenter closed by thanking her parents and all those at District 3 who have been so helpful to her. She said she looks forward to next year and making All Around three years in row. Brum, a sophomore, not only won All Around last year, but also won it when competing at the junior varsity level. Brum also does five events eschewing only bareback riding and steer wrestling. Brum qualified for state in all of his events but said he doesn?t plan to compete in cutting. ?I?m not going to enter state in the cutting just because I don?t have a horse that?s good enough for it to place,? Brum said. ?There?s no reason to do it and I?ve already got enough events as it is.? Brum won the bull riding competition at the Challenge of Champions and placed fifth in calf roping. He said he could also do well in the saddleback bronc riding because that event is just a matter of staying on. The CHSRA JV Nationals will be held in Gallup, NM, June 24-30. The varsity nationals are scheduled for July 15-21 in Rock Springs, Wyo. California High School Rodeo Association District 3 Thundering Three Graduating Seniors C.J.
