Joshua Atkins charged with murdering 19-year-old Minor Leon
A Folsom transient is facing murder charges after stabbing another man. Joshua Allen Atkins, a 22-year-old transient from Folsom, was involved in a fatal altercation with Minor Leon, 19. According to police, it may have been the result of a drug deal gone bad. He is expected in Sacramento County Superior Court for his second appearance at 8:30 a.m., Oct. 13. Just before midnight on Saturday, Oct. 1, a Folsom Police officer was driving in the 600 block of East Bidwell Street when he saw Atkins run across the street in front of his marked patrol car, said Sgt. Jason Browning, with the Folsom Police Department. When the officer caught up to Atkins a couple of blocks away, the suspect directed the officer to a knife hidden nearby. The victim was found lying face down on the sidewalk in front of 616 E. Bidwell St. “Officers saw the man on the sidewalk in a pool of blood,” Browning said. Leon was non-responsive and without a pulse. Folsom Fire Department paramedics transported Leon to Mercy Folsom Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. When Atkins was spotted by the officer, he was running from the same area the man was found, according to Browning. Atkins was charged with felony murder and booked into Sacramento County Jail. His first court appearance was Tuesday, Oct. 4. A makeshift memorial was set up near the site of the stabbing on East Bidwell Street. Supporters of the accused murderer have created a Facebook page dubbed "Support Joshua Allen Atkins."' Another page was set up for the victim, called "R.I.P. Minor Leon" on which friends are posting remembrances. Don Chaddock contributed to this report.
